Our firm was founded in 1982 when existing Partner Philip
Kirkland acquired a Solicitors’ general practice in Romsey. A
year later he was joined by a Partner to take care of litigation
and contentious work. The firm has continued to grow in
personnel, expertise and specialisation and now serves the Test
Valley, New Forest and Southampton areas.
On the strength of our
reputation we have also attracted clients from across Hampshire
and beyond, with some living as far a field as Europe, the United
States and the Caribbean.

The wise client will instruct a solicitor rather than
employ a less qualified practitioner |
|
We take a ‘quality not quantity’ approach to our work. Our
clients are in the safe hands of widely experienced and
rigorously trained practitioners who abide by the Law Society’s
standards of good practice. We aim to make simple what are often
feared as complex legal problems and processes, providing a down
to earth and swift service at a very competitive price.
The affable personality of our firm is captured in the
cartoons of McLachlan, which are exclusive to us and which we
hope raise a little smile.

Philip
Kirkland
Philip established the firm more than 25 years ago, having
previously managed the branch offices of other solicitors for
whom he had worked. He qualified as a solicitor over 30 years
ago and apart from spending a couple of years in retail
management Philip has been involved in private practice ever
since. Philip regards his two years away from the law as a great
experience that has helped him appreciate the practical
complexities and difficulties often faced by his business
clients.
During the earlier part of his career Philip personally
covered the whole range of general practice work, including
litigation, which has left him with an excellent ‘feel’ for all
the work handled by the firm. Philip is thus able to offer
valuable input when colleagues are in need of a second opinion.
Philip now specialises in business matters of all kinds,
including sales and purchases, and commercial and residential
property. Together with Michael, Philip is responsible for the
management and administration of the firm and whilst Michael
supports the litigation work Philip backs up probate, dealing
with wills, administration of estates and elderly persons’ law.
Philip has lived all his working life in the area served by
the firm, which gives him a detailed and very useful
understanding of local people and practices as well as
neighbouring practitioners and professional contacts.
Philip’s two children have now flown the nest leaving Philip
and his wife Barbara to enjoy their enthusiasm for France and
travel generally. Philip’s interests include most sports,
particularly golf, which he watches and plays so far as fitness
levels permit.

Michael
Joy
Michael joined Philip Kirkland in partnership in 1992 having
moved to Hampshire in the early 1980s. A qualified solicitor for
over 30 years, he has amassed a wealth of experience in many
areas of law.
Michael has always been a general practitioner of the law,
which means that he is able to deal with a variety of matters
without needing to involve others. For many of our clients
Michael is the single point of contact for all their legal
problems and procedures, the only person relied upon to help
them through life’s legal complexities.
Whilst he enjoys turning his hand to anything, Michael deals
mainly with the firm’s civil litigation and employment matters
together with business sales and acquisitions. He has also built
up a following in residential and commercial conveyancing.
Rather than taking a strictly academic approach, Michael likes
to find practical solutions to problems and has an eye for the
commercial resolution.
Michael has been married to Sue for over 35 years and they
have two grown up children. Michael likes to relax on the golf
course, although he still retains a keen interest in rugby and
cricket which were his passions in his younger years. These days
Michael’s appreciation of sport competes with – and often comes
second best to - his enjoyment of good food and fine wine.

Peter
Slade
Peter spent the first ten years of his working life in Local
Government and was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of
Legal Executives in 1981. After spells in the legal departments
of Southampton City Council and Test Valley Borough Council he

Louise
Broomfield
Louise, our specialist Family Law Solicitor, joined Kirklands
in 2005 after stints with, among others, a ‘regional
heavyweight’ Legal 500 firm and a large Legal Aid practice. Her
wide-ranging experience, be it legal, practical or personal,
means that whilst Louise takes a commonsense approach to family
matters she is also adept at thinking outside the box – the more
complex the problem, the more enjoyable the challenge.
Louise is a member of the family law organisation Resolution,
which promotes a conciliatory approach to resolving issues.
Louise is the friend you can rely on to help guide you towards
an amicable and fair solution, yet when the going gets tough
Louise makes for a strong advocate. She is as comfortable
freezing a dishonest spouse’s assets in the High Court as she is
drafting a mutually agreed ‘consent order’ providing for parents
to share the care of their children. Meticulous and tenacious
when it comes to the law and committed to every one of her
cases, Louise is well respected by other lawyers and trusted by
her clients.
Louise is a Romsey Town Councillor and lives locally with her
two children. In her spare time
she enjoys cooking, reading and listening to music, preferably
accompanied by a glass of wine. Signed up to the healthy body
equals healthy mind philosophy, Louise is often spotted out
jogging in time to the beats on her ipod.

Hafwen
Webb
Hafi, our specialist Wills and Probate Solicitor, joined
Kirklands upon qualification in 2006. Previously, Hafi’s career
was in Information Technology, working for public and private
companies with ‘household names’. She also gained a doctorate
(PhD) in respect of her geo-archaeological research into how
soil movement determines the survival of archaeological sites.
Hafi’s varied background, combining a fierce intellect with a
hands-on approach, enables her to draw upon a wide range of
experiences when advising her clients.
The death of a loved one is extremely sad and sometimes
devastating, particularly for those responsible for sorting out
the deceased’s personal affairs. Hafi provides a sympathetic and
supportive role to her clients by removing uncertainties and
reducing anxieties. She will advise and assist with the
administration of a simple estate and for larger, more complex
matters she will take over the whole administrative process.
From drafting straightforward Wills to preparing complex
Trusts with important inheritance tax implications, Hafi can
accommodate every client’s wishes, however large or small, for
their Wills and is happy to discuss different approaches to
estate planning.
Hafi is married with a young daughter and lives locally.

Jill
Donbavand
Jill joined the firm in 1982 as an office junior before
graduating to become Philip Kirkland’s secretary, whereupon she
developed a keen interest in residential conveyancing. Having
worked from our Totton office for a period of some 20 years,
Jill now deals with all residential conveyancing out of that
office and has established her own very substantial following.
Her client base is forever expanding due to referrals and
recommendations and these days it includes the children of
existing clients who are wishing to start on the property
ladder.
Jill has a keen knowledge of Totton and its surroundings and
has formed excellent working relationships with all the local
estate agents and conveyancers in the area. She prides herself
on her ability to provide a friendly and efficient service to
all of her clients, which is why they (and their children) come
back again and again.
Away from the office Jill enjoys a full family life with her
husband and daughter, including those all important holidays in
the sun.

Vikki
Mander
Having specialised in residential conveyancing for over 10
years, Vikki joined Kirklands in 2006. Her training was
undertaken with one of the largest law firms in Southampton and
Vikki is a member of the Institute of Legal Executives.
Vikki has always lived and worked locally, building up an
impressive network of contacts and establishing a good knowledge
of the area. Having worked for larger firms, Vikki is well
equipped to deal with the stresses and strains of ‘conveyor belt
conveyancing’, however, she prefers the direct and more
personalised contact to her clients that working for a smaller
firm allows.
Vikki is married with a daughter, a horse, a dog and a cat.
Her hobbies include clay pigeon shooting, country walks,
overseas travel and shopping.
